Mental health requires just as much attention as your physical health

Do you work out your brain as much as you work out your body? What does it even mean to work out your brain anyways?


There's a saying that you should train your brain like a muscle. Your brain has fragments of muscle but it's mostly a huge inter web of connections in white and grey matter that's present everywhere, and it ultimately creates who you are, how you feel, how you function, and how you perceive life. Different types of feelings come from different parts of your brain, for example, your emotional control.


Emotions are managed mostly by signals from the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure in the brain somewhere near the centre. I've heard some people refer to the amygdala as a tiny almond of terror, constantly screaming in your brain. Vaguely speaking, your motivational drive is largely influenced by the amygdala, as are some bits of our perceptions on success & failure.

The brain is constantly sharing messages, kind of like this image. There's a LOT going on in there, even when you're feeling blank.


But when we feel blank, we are unconsciously running around in our heads, trying to figure out what to do next or feel next, forgetting that we have to slow our bodies down and reconnect with where our mind is at. The connections in your brain can become so volatile if we let them, sinking their way into our memory as false facts.


Bringing awareness to some regular brain training activities are a great way to remind yourself to check back in and make sure everything is okay. If it's not, break it down as to why it's not okay, before you break down and question, why?


My favourite way to de-bunk bad feelings is finding a comfy spot to relax, getting out my journal, and dumping all my thoughts onto paper, just so I can begin to see where I am in my mind space. I also use essential oils to regulate my mood, and this mood calls for Frankincense, Copaiba, and Balance.


Leaving unmanaged stress to sit in your brain, will result in it sitting in your body that will eventually create an illness. That seems like a bold statement, but it's known that stress (a mental perception) can trigger illnesses of all sorts.


So how can you exercise your brain?


Mindfulness and/or Meditation

Taking a moment of silence to reflect can often allow your brain enough time to separate your logic from your emotion and put you in the headspace of making better decisions. First, you sit in silence. Take 5 minutes to think about absolutely nothing except how you are breathing. Use a timer so you do not need to check a clock and close your eyes to help you focus. Remove all distractions is necessary.


Breathe slowly, deeply, and with no extra thoughts in your brain.


Once this activity is over, You can proceed to manage whatever stress is bothering you at this moment, and with logic. If you find yourself re-lapsing in stress, repeat this process with the mantra,

"it's going to be okay, I just need to think about it"


Having a healthy relationship with people

Sometimes, having strong relationships with others can help you to have a stronger relationship with yourself. Exchanging kind words, and constructive thoughts can help you through tough times. When you think and say nice things about others, you, in turn, think nice things and say nice things about yourself. The relationship you have with people at times can decide the relationship you have with yourself, so decide on having a good one. It really benefits everyone to be kind.


Feeding your brain the right food

Feeding yourself healthy food essentially feeds your brain and powers the control center of everything you think and feel. Making sure you eat balanced meals at routine times will also help your body to regulate those meals without any added physical stress.


Water is brain food too. Drink up.

Mindfulness, healthy relationships, and brain food are the major ways we all need to contribute to our mental health. They are required in order to maintain the stability of our everyday lives and the stress that comes along with it.


Whatever we choose to do in addition to that will only lead to a greater understanding of how we really experience mental health.




Journaling

Journalling has always been my go-to method for understanding who I am, and my next steps in life. I believe it all started after my first break-up that really needed to be removed from my head (how cute of me, in my little adolescent years). It was the best way I could understand myself and what I was feeling.


Now I find myself running out of pages by the end of each year because I've taken the time to fill all 45o of them. I like to use bullet journal techniques as it offers me a variety of ways to organize my thoughts. A couple of things I do each month are gratitude calendars and mood trackers. Both of those allow me to see where I am headed up and down and at what points of the month...... (because we all know hormones affect our mood ladies! so it can be good to be mindful)


Ange Peters shared a simple activity you can do in your journal called a brain dump. I LOVE it, as it directly correlates to getting shit out of your head. Take 5 mins to get all of your thoughts onto paper, anything that comes to mind will work. If all you can think about is how good your day is, write about that to. This process is enlightening in itself and reduces the nighttime worry of dwelling on untouched topics. Get it out of your head, and you can deal with it later.


Essential Oils


Certified pure therapeutic grade essential oil products, specifically doTERRA has been my go-to for mental management for the last 2 years. I had a moment where I carried a lot of doubt as per the efficacy of essential oils, but it was also a time I wasn't really using my oils properly, and I was trying to figure out if a certain pharmaceutical medication was something I might actually need.



Once I got back on track and decided that I wanted to take the holistic route, I began using my oils more often and in different applications such as topically and internally. I really felt the healing benefits behind oils when I dropped Frankincense under my tongue to relieve a moment of high anxiety I was experiencing. The relief was found within 3-5 minutes and I genuinely wanted to try it again, because I was still in somewhat of disbelief as to how that could even be effective. Even though I knew how powerful healing plants were, especially in that concentration.

I'm always finding new ways to use my products in the most appropriate way for my body at that moment.
